Title: Deputy Sheriff Officer

Job Classification: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

Work Schedule: 24/7

Reporting Relationship: Sheriff 

Primary Accountabilities:

The Deputy Sheriff Officer is responsible for fulfilling the mission, goals and objectives of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. Such duties include enforcing traffic laws, protecting crime scenes and collecting evidence/information, conducting investigations, and providing emergency assistance.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Keeps daily activity logs and reports.

· Responds to dispatch orders without unnecessary delay.

· Manages, directs, and maintains peace and order in the County through the law enforcement functions of the Sheriff’s Office.

· Maintains and enforces adherence to the State and U.S. Constitution, state law, Sheriff’s philosophy, policies and procedures, and standards.

· Sets and maintains the highest standards of fairness, attention to duty, and accomplishment of the mission established by the Sheriff.

· Patrols Cities (incorporated and unincorporated) during shifts.

General Responsibilities:

· Provides general law enforcement services to those within the jurisdictional limits of the agency.

· Preserves public peace, protects life and property, and prevents crime.

· Protects the constitutional rights of all persons encountered or arrested.

· Advises all suspects of their rights as assured by the U.S. Constitution, and upon request provides those rights accordingly.

· Provides equal protection for all.

· Enforces laws of the state and other applicable ordinances.

· Remains on duty and fully conscious until the expiration of the shift, and/or relieved by a supervisor. Remains mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared to perform all required duties.

Qualifications:

· Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

· Must possess valid Kansas Driver’s License.

· Must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Kansas.

· Must reside/live within Ottawa County within six (6) months of Hire.

· Must have never been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude and have no previous or current charges of driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol within the last five (5) years.

· Must undergo and successfully complete a thorough background investigation and personal interviews by agency personnel.

· If served in the armed forces of any country, must have the ability to demonstrate stability, reliability, and integrity, by having been Honorably Discharged. Dishonorable discharged will not be accepted.

· Ability to demonstrate reading and comprehension skills in the English language to at least the twelfth (12th) grade level or GED through interviews and written demonstration of proficiency.

· Must be free from any illegal or legal drug use that impairs mental or physical performance for the past five (5) years, as determined by interviews, medical, or polygraph testing.

· Ability to demonstrate honesty and integrity by successfully completing pre-employment polygraph and drug testing.

· Must be fingerprinted and subjected to a search of local, state and national records and fingerprint files.

· Must undergo physical and psychological assessments by licensed professionals. If a physician or mental health professional identifies conditions that impede or prevent the individual from performing the essential tasks of this position, the applicant may not be eligible for employment as a law enforcement officer with Ottawa County Sheriff until such time the issue is resolved to the satisfaction of the original professional.

· Ability to meet academic and physical requirements for completion of the law enforcement officers’ course and certification, as required by the state, or have successfully completed the required peace office academy training.

· Ability to maintain a license as a law enforcement or peace officer as defined by the state statute, rules and regulations.

· Must complete the required Law Enforcement Officer Credentials through Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center.

· Ability to independently exercise common sense and good judgment under pressure.

· Demonstrate computer and keyboarding skills in word processing, spreadsheet and research.

Work Environment:

· Work is performed primarily in an outdoor setting with some standard office settings, as well.

· Subject to frequent interruptions with frequent amount of public contact.

· Noise level is moderate.

· Subject to potentially dangerous situations and scenarios.

Title: Road and Bridge Laborer

Job Classification: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

Department: Road and Bridge

Primary Accountabilities:

The Road and Bridge Laborer    is responsible for performing tasks involving physical labor, semi-skilled equipment operation at sites. This position may perform general laborer duties related to bridge construction or repair, as well as duties related to asphalt work and preparation. This position may operate hand and power tools of all types, operate light equipment, and may assist other workers, performing duties while maintaining safety of site for all workers and the public. This position will interact with customers to provide information in response to inquiries about services and to handle and resolve any issues while delivering the highest level of customer service to Ottawa County.

Primary Responsibilities:

   ·         Operates a variety of vehicles, included but not limited to, light equipment vehicles, mowers, pickup trucks, single axle dump trucks, small front-end loader, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.

·         Operates power tools such as chainsaws and weed eaters.

   ·         Operates equipment and do assigned work observing safety rules and common-sense practices.

·         Completes clean up of the yard and/or shop buildings, and general utility work.

·         Performs general laborer duties related to road work such as flagging traffic, trimming trees, cutting brush, grass and weeds, and replacing traffic control signs.

·         Cleans up roadside debris.

·         Assists with snow and ice removal.

·         Performs duties related to bridge construction or repair such as patching bridge surfaces, replacing bridge planks, and setting forms for concrete.

·         Performs duties related to asphalt work and preparation for asphalt work, and general clean up after.  

·         Works with other departments to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.

Qualifications:

·         Must possess high school diploma or GED.

·         Must possess or be able to obtain a Kansas Driver’s License during all times of employment with Ottawa County. Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of employment.

·         Must be able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, and random testing throughout employment.

Physical Demands:

 ·         Frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting or climbing, and balancing. 

 


 

Title: Road and Bridge Blade Operator

Job Classification: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

Department: Road and Bridge

Primary Accountabilities:

The Road and Bridge Blade Operator    is responsible for performing tasks involving physical labor, semi-skilled equipment operation at sites. This position may operate hand and power tools of all types, operate light equipment, and may assist other workers, performing duties while maintaining safety of site for all workers and the public. This position will interact with customers to provide information in response to inquiries about services and to handle and resolve any issues while delivering the highest level of customer service to Ottawa County.

Primary Responsibilities:

·         Operates a variety of vehicles, included but not limited to, motor grade, snow plow, tractors, backhoe, loader, grass mowers, chainsaws, and other equipment as assigned for the construction, repair and maintenance of roadways, drainage systems, bridges, culverts, properties and structures in the County in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.

·         Repairs and constructs roadway surface failures and potholes; maintains roads, shoulders, and grades.

·         Responds to emergencies such as snowstorms, clearing County roadways of snow and ice and applies materials as necessary. Responds to other emergencies such as floods or other natural disasters.

·         Performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs and reports complex mechanical problems for shop repairs.

·         Assures equipment has the necessary fuel, lubricants, and supplies to perform his or her duties.

·         Patrols approximately one hundred (100) miles of County roads including blacktop, gravel, and dirt roads. Maintains and patrols territory roads as needed. Removes snow, grades roads as necessary to remove ruts and provide proper run-off. May fill with gravel.

Qualifications:

·         Must possess high school diploma or GED.

·         Must possess or be able to obtain a Kansas Driver’s License during all times of employment with Ottawa County. Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of employment.

·         Must be able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, and random testing throughout employment.

·         Must be able to operate a tractor and mower.

·         Must obtain thorough knowledge of heavy and light machinery and equipment, hand and power tools.
